Tottenham’s Destiny Udogie says his season is over due to injury

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Destiny Udogie says his season is over due to injury.

Udogie, 21, has been a near ever-present for Tottenham this season, missing only two games due to injury and two due to suspension.

Having spent last season back on loan at Udinese, Udogie has been a key part of Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs side this season, contributing two goals and three assists in his 28 Premier League appearances. His performances were rewarded with a new contract until 2030 in December.

Spurs do not have a league fixture this weekend after their game against Manchester City was rescheduled due to the Etihad Stadium club’s participation in the FA Cup semi-finals but Udogie had started and played 90 minutes in their previous seven league matches, including last Saturday’s 4-0 loss at Newcastle United.

But his season appears to be over as Tottenham battle for a Champions League qualification spot in their remaining five matches, with Postecoglou’s side three points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa having played one game fewer.

“The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the Lord,” Udogie posted, alongside pictures of himself in a hospital bed.

“An injury brings my season to an early end. It doesn’t take away from how grateful I am to every person that has supported me this year.”

Udogie’s injury may also have implications for his participation in this summer’s European Championship with Italy. The defender received his first senior call-up last October and has played three times for his country since.

Tottenham are back in action on April 28 when they host rivals Arsenal in the Premier League.
