The Nigerian Trademark Tribunal has made an important decision about who owns the rights to the popular Netflix series “Shanty Town” and its related trademarks.
On January 10, 2024, Ini Edo and Minini Empire Productions Limited (MEP) filed a petition against Chinenye Nworah and her company, GCM Giant Creative Media Limited. This petition was about who owned the trademark rights for “Shanty Town.”
The tribunal made its decision on July 18, 2024.
They ruled that Chinenye Nworah and GCM Giant Creative Media Limited are the rightful owners of the trademarks “Shanty Town” and “Scar.”
This legal battle began earlier in the year when Nollywood actress Ini Edo and producer Chinenye Nworah disagreed over who owned “Shanty Town.” This dispute put the planned second season of the show on hold.
The tribunal rejected the petition filed by Ini Edo’s lawyers and Minini Empire Productions Limited. Instead, they gave ownership to Nworah and her production company.
After this ruling, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) made another important decision. On July 24, 2024, they confirmed that the copyright certificates given to Nworah were valid. The NCC dismissed Edo’s petition and upheld Nworah’s copyrights as legally valid.
These decisions mean that Chinenye Nworah and her company now have official recognition as the owners of “Shanty Town” and its related trademarks.
